Roman bone distaff with dove motif (Imperial Period, approx. 18cm)

This Roman distaff made of polished bone is based on a find from Gaul (present-day France) and dates to the Imperial period.

Finger distaffs were used during spinning to guide and stabilize the raw wool. At the same time, however, they were also a status symbol and were often presented as a high-quality gift – for example, at a wedding.

This particular specimen is elaborately crafted and adorned with a dove, a motif that already held symbolic meaning in antiquity. The shaft is additionally decorated with twisted grooves, showcasing the craftsmanship of Roman artisans.

This detailed replica combines historical utility with decorative aesthetics and is suitable for reenactment as well as an exceptional collector's item.
