Roman hairpin made of polished bone with characteristic baluster decoration, based on a find from the High Imperial period in Xanten.

The baluster shape depicted here is a typical design element of the Roman Imperial period. Its slightly structured, knob-shaped head resembles architectural balusters or stylized plant forms such as pine cones. Such forms were particularly widespread in the 2nd and 3rd centuries and reflect the decorative taste of this era.
