Roman bone hairpin with rooster - 1st-3rd century, Augst (Switzerland), approx. 14 cm

Roman hair pin made of polished bone with figural decoration in the shape of a rooster, based on a 1st to 3rd century AD find from Augst in Switzerland.

Hair pins were widely used utilitarian and decorative objects in Roman antiquity and served to fix elaborate hairstyles. In addition to simple forms, there were also elaborately designed specimens with symbolic representations.

The rooster had a special meaning in the Roman imagination: it was considered a companion of the god Mercury and symbolised vigilance, success and prosperity. Such representations could therefore not only be decorative but also fulfil a symbolic function.

The design of this hair pin is deliberately kept simple and closely follows the archaeological original find. This conveys an authentic impression of Roman everyday and jewellery culture.
