Bone was already a widely used material for sewing needles in prehistory and remained an important material during the Roman Imperial period. Such needles are accordingly frequently found in archaeological finds from settlements and military camps throughout the Roman Empire.
The simple, functional shape with a finely crafted eye shows the practical orientation of these everyday objects. They were used for sewing and repairing clothing, leather goods, or other textiles and were part of the basic equipment for daily life.
