Roman bone buttons - Augst (Switzerland), 1st-4th century, approx. 2cm

Buttons made of polished bone, based on a find from the Roman Imperial period in Augst, Switzerland.

Such buttons with concentric circle patterns are found at numerous sites throughout the Roman Empire and remained virtually unchanged in form from the 1st to the 4th century. They are among the typical small finds and provide a vivid insight into the clothing and equipment of the Roman population.

They were presumably incorporated into leather or fabric and served as fasteners or holders. They are particularly often interpreted in connection with straps, bags, or belts. The replica shown here is closely based on archaeological models and was designed as a pair of buttons for a sword or belt strap.
