This Roman pyxis made of polished bone is crafted after a 1st-century find from Italy and closely follows the formal language of the early imperial period.

The box is decorated with elaborate leaf ornamentation and fine decorative studs. While the original often used gold leaf, this reconstruction employs brass, creating an authentic yet durable contrast.

The depicted leaf can be interpreted as an ivy leaf, a motif that was associated with deities like Bacchus or Apollo in Roman antiquity. Such boxes were often used for storing ointments, cosmetics, or medicinal substances.
