Roman bone hairpin - handmade replica based on a find from Xanten
Roman bone hairpin - handmade replica based on a find from Xanten
This Roman hairpin, made of polished bone, is based on a historical find from Xanten and is inspired by typical forms of Roman hair accessories from the 1st-3rd centuries AD.
Numerous hairpins were needed for the elaborate hairstyles of Roman women. Accordingly, such objects are frequently found in archaeological excavations throughout the Roman Empire - from Africa to Britain. Most specimens were simply designed, only featuring fine profiles or geometric decorations.
A historical everyday object with a timelessly simple form.
The shape of this hairpin remained almost unchanged for many centuries, making it suitable for various Roman periods and representations.
Each hairpin is individually hand-carved from bone and carefully polished. Due to the natural material and artisanal manufacturing, slight differences in color, structure, and shape may occur.
Each piece is a handcrafted unique item.
