This hairpin is based on an archaeological find from Carnuntum and dates to the 2nd-3rd century. It is made of polished bone and decorated with a slightly stylized horse's head.
In antiquity, horses were not only valued for their beauty and strength but also held symbolic significance. As an animal associated with the god Neptune, they could express protection and a connection to the god of the seas and rivers.
