Roman children's rattle made of bone after a find from Herculaneum, polished bone, 1st century, approx. 9 cm
This children's rattle, made of polished bone, is based on a find from the city of Herculaneum, which was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The rattle is thus firmly dated to the year 79. With its movable element, it creates a pleasant rattling sound that was intended to entertain and engage infants.
This rattle is not suitable as a children's toy, but serves as equipment/display object in the reenactment area.
Each rattle has a length of about 9cm.
Not a toy! Unsuitable for small children. Choking hazard!
May only be used under adult supervision.
Each item is individually carved by hand. Because of this, and because each piece of bone is unique, slight variations may occur.
