Roman miniature wax tablet with bone stylus

Wax tablets were one of the most important writing materials in the Roman world for centuries. From North Africa to Britain, they were used for notes, calculations, messages and teaching. Most specimens were made of wood, but exceptional pieces made of bone have also been preserved.

This miniature wax tablet is based on a find from Cologne and was made after an original model from polished bovine bone. Such small and finely crafted examples were probably luxurious notepads for wealthy Romans or served as high-quality toys.

The set includes a matching bone stylus, which allows the use of ancient writing tools to be recreated.

Each piece is handcrafted and carefully polished. Since bone is a natural material, the color, structure and grain differ slightly from each other. This makes each set unique.
