Roman quill pen, 2nd century, polished bone, approx. 9-10 cm, after a find from Augst (Augusta Raurica, CH) Being able to read and write was a given in the Roman Empire. Along with wax tablets, papyrus and ink were the most popular writing materials. Unlike in the Middle Ages, however, the Romans did not use quill pens, but rather pen nibs made of reed, metal, or bone.
