Roman drop spindle / distaff with Venus and Amor - replica made of polished bone

This Roman distaff made of polished bone is based on a historical find from the 3rd century and modelled on an original from the WWU Münster Museum.

In antiquity, distaffs were used to hold wool while spinning. However, their practical function often played only a minor role. Many of these objects were elaborately designed and considered prestige items, used to display wealth and social status.

This replica is crowned by a depiction of Venus - the Roman goddess of love and beauty - holding her son Cupid in her arms. The depicted hairstyle corresponds to typical fashion forms of the first half of the 3rd century, allowing for a precise chronological classification of the original.

The bone is carefully hand-worked and polished to a high sheen, creating a smooth surface with a natural texture and an authentic historical feel.
